My name is Martin Výška and currently I am in the second year of my PhD studies at University of Cambridge. Prior to this, with the financial support from Bakala Foundation, I completed the undergraduate programme of Mathematics from which I gratuated at University of Cambridge in 2013. In the beginning of my studies, I was motivated by a desire for knowledge and for basic research in theoretical physics. Nevertheless, during the last few years I realized that I would like to use my education in more practical way. The main topic of my PhD research is creating mathematical models of spread of infectious diseases. Specifically, I deal with a problem how to distribute limited resources, for example medical personnel or vaccines, or pesticides, in the event of a plant diseases, among various regions affected by epidemy. An example of a project which I participate in is creating models of spread of viral diseases of Manioc in Africa, where this plant is the only source of alimentation for millions of people.
