Lynda Gonzalez has won the Journey: Journalism Bootcamp 2017!

October 26, 2017
Competition for young journalists from 12 countries, organized as part of the Journey: Journalism Bootcamp program knows this year’s winners. Participants worked for several months on their project under the tutelage of their mentors, experienced editors who lead them through the creative process, from sourcing to reporting to writing. This year’s theme was “Populism“ and Journey fellows approached it from a great number of angles – their work can be seen at https://journey2017.atavist.com/
“The bar was set high and all the submissions were of very high quality,” commented Tereza Novotná, a member of the jury, on the final projects. The jury selected article A Different Kind of Border Wall as the best submission and its author, Ms. Lynda Gonzalez (USA), was thus named the absolute winner of the 2017 competition. Lynda’s article was selected because it was well thought out with a compact structure from the beginning till the end. “Lynda managed to clearly illustrate a general problem on a specific example while still tying it to a broader policy issue. Also, the article showed the author’s passion about the topic,” said Michael Kahn and Kateřina Šantúrová, both members of the jury. Besides the main award, four category awards were also given to articles that excelled in particular aspects of journalistic work. Students from Ukraine have won three of the category awards. Ms. Marta Znak was awarded for Best Reporting on No to Bribes, Yes to Payments, Ms. Lidiia Akryshora received an Award for Best use of Multimedia for Integrate Us: How Food Helps Refugees Feel at Home in Austria, Ms. Anna Serheieva was given the Award for Potential Social Impact for her article Death in War Doesn’t Choose Gender and this year’s absolute winner Lynda Gonzalez received Award for Best Writing. Bakala Foundation hereby congratulates all the winners and thanks every one of the Journey participants for their hard work and dedication they have shown throughout the program.
