"Journey: journalism boot camp" program knows its winners!

October 14, 2016
Competition for young journalists from around the globe, organized as part of the "Journey: journalism boot camp" program knows its winners! Participants worked for several months on their project under tutelage of their Mentors, experienced editors who lead them through the creative process, from sourcing to reporting to writing. This year's theme was "Nationalism" and our Fellows approached it from a great number of angles - their work can be seen at https://journey2016.atavist.com/. The submitted articles were reviewed by a three-member independent jury, consisting of Ms. Jessica Bruder (Columbia School of Journalism), Ms. Gordana Knezevic (Radio Free Europe) and Ms. Melissa Durda (Managing Board of the Bakala Foundation). The jurors reviewed the articles thoroughly and although the bar was set high this year and all the submissions were of very high quality, the winner could unfortunately only be one. All submissions can be viewed at https://journey2016.atavist.com/. The jury selected article "Vigilante Uprising: A Glimpse into Bulgaria's Southern Border" as the best submission and its author, Martin Grahovski was thus named the absolute winner of the 2016 competition! As a prize, Martin will receive a fully funded 6-week internship at Radio Free Europe's headquarters in Prague. Besides the main award, four category awards were also given to article that excelled in particular aspects of journalistic work: Boglarka Kosztolanyi was awarded for "Best Reporting" on "They don't want to steal, they don't want to rape, they don't want to stay" Valerie Kovtun received an "Award for Best use of Multimedia" Iva Yankova was given the "Award for Potential Social Impact" for her article "Well-settled and Ill-perceived" and the absolute winner Martin Grahovski received "Award for Best Writing". We would like to congratulate all the winners and thank every one of the participants for their hard work and dedication to the program! It was a great experience!
