We announce the sixth year of SCHOLARSHIP program. The deadline for applications for SCHOLARSHIP 2015 program will be May 31.
Our scholars (for 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015) are studying at prestigious universities, primarily in the US and UK. They have demonstrated excellence in their academic and extracurricular activities, while volunteering their time and energy to helping people in need. We are in contact with them through alumni networks. They have their own blogs and can be reached on Facebook.
Prague, June 22, 2016: 218 students filed their application for a scholarship to support their graduate and undergraduate studies abroad. The Foundation will now select candidates who will be invited for an interview. Roughly one out of ten applicants will be asked to meet with the selection jury and will try to convince its members to grant her or him financial support during studies at world’s most prestigious universities. Starting on March 7, 2016 you can submit your application for 10-day intensive summer school of journalism. This year's course will be taking place in Prague, Czech Republic between August 6 and 16. The course is open to journalists from Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine, United Kingdom and the USA. For more information, click HERE.
Are You Tempted by the Idea of Studying Abroad? The Bakala Foundation is once again offering its Scholarship Program. Applications are now being accepted for the seventh year of this worthwhile program, which provides financial aid to young people interested in completing their undergraduate and graduate studies at prestigious universities abroad. The deadline for submission is May 31, 2016. Applications must be submitted electronically using the form available on the Bakala Foundation website. A key criterion for acceptance is the applicant’s essay, written in English, on a selected topic.

According to the independent jury, the best work submitted for the “Journey: journalism boot camp” journalistic project competition was video report “Ignoring me“ produced by Stephanie Strauss (USA). Stephanie’s project dealt with Czech education system’s approach towards dyslectic children and the jury praised both the choice of subject and journalistic quality of the project. The general subject of this year’s competition was “People Power: Organizing for Change”. Selection of specific subject was up to each individual participant and the submissions came in various formats, ranging from written text to multimedia reports to online infographics and covering great number of issues, among others for example the humanitarian crisis in eastern Ukraine, LGBT movement or refugee issues in Europe. Prague, 9th of October 2015: The Bakala Foundation in collaboration with the Kaplicky Centre Foundation and the Design Museum of London announces the first winner of the Kaplicky Internship in the architectural student competition. The winner is Ondřej Michálek from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. The prize winner also receives a three-month internship at one of the prestigious British architectural studios. In the coming months Ondřej Michálek will be welcomed by fellow architects at Eva Jiřičná’s London architectural studio. Eva Jiřičná was member of the jury, along with Deyan Sudjic, the Director of London Design Museum and Honorary jury member Eliška Kaplicky. A slight majority of talented students who are current or former grantees of the Bakala Foundation Scholarship Foundation and The Kellner Family Foundation are dissatisfied with the quality of education in the Czech Republic. Almost twenty per cent of them plan to stay several years abroad after they complete their master's degree in order to get professional experience. On the other hand, some thirty percent of the students prefer to return to the Czech Republic. Press Release

Congratulations to all one more time! We would also like to wish the best of luck to those who didn't make it this year as we hope that they won't give on their dreams. Big thanks go to members of our Selection Comittee who made it through two incredible - although exhausting - days they spent interviewing our applicants. Another "thank you" to the Forum Karlín staff for their excellent work and most of all to Mrs. and Mr. Bakala who made all this possible.
Demand for financial support for studies abroad through the SCHOLARSHIP program is strong as ever in 2015. 238 students applied for the program and the Foundation will now select among them those, who will be invited for personal interviews. Approximately one in ten applicants will be picked, and if they prove their qualities to the selection committee, they will receive a scholarship which will help them to pay for their studies at prestigeous universities abroad.

Over 200 applications for the "Journey: journalism boot camp" received!
Preparations for this year’s Journey: journalism boot camp are already in full swing and we would like to introduce first four of the many great lecturers that will be conducting our workshops: Pulitzer Prize winners Jesse Eisinger and Charles Ornstein of ProPublica, Michael Kahn of Reuters and Paul Casciato of Cheary & Gallagher. The Bakala Foundation is launching already sixth round of the popular SCHOLARSHIP program, which every year allows selected students to apply for world’s most prestigious universities. The constantly increasing amount of applications stands as a proof that the Czech Republic has talented and motivated young people, who can compete with the best students from around the globe. And it is those talents who the program is dedicated to. The deadline for this year’s applications is set for May 31st, 2015. Applications are accepted through electronic form, available at the foundation’s website. Future Bakala Scholars will be picked through a two-round selection process. Expert jury will first evaluate the received applications, the best applicants will then be invited for personal interview. Until now a total of 87 students have been supported in their studies at top universities in a number of different countries. Read more

In 2009, the first year of our SCHOLARSHIP program, we received 147 applications, compared to 230 last year; the number has been steadily rising, with the quality of applicants improving every year. The interviews will be held on September 5th and 6th in Forum Karlin.
